En démantelant des images et des mots puisés d’albums et de vidéos de famille personnels, l’artiste reconstitue en performances et en objets matériels les bribes de son histoire. Segmentées et semi-reconstituées, ces mèches de souvenirs, à la fois humoristiques et mélancoliques, s’unifient en postiche.
Arsenault questionne aussi la narrative héritée d’autrui. Elle adopte les anecdotes et les artéfacts des autres afin de les imprégner dans son folklore personnel. À partir du réel et de l’imaginé, elle crée des intersections et transforme la narration. Le souvenir étant forcément à une distance de la réalité vécue, elle questionne l’importance de la véracité biographique lors de la conception de soi. S’outillant plutôt du mythe, de la parabole et de la métaphore, elle construit des installations autobiographiques qui dépassent les marges de la narration chronologique. En tissant faits vécus, exagérations et inventions de façon délibérée, elle mimique ce que les êtres font déjà de façon organique.
By dismantling images and words drawn from her personal family albums and videos, the artist reconstitutes by way of performances and the creation of physical objects segments of her heritage. Disjointed and semi-reconstituted, theses strands of memory, that are simultaneously melancolic and humoristic, are united in a false yet genuine recount of history.
Arsenault questions other peoples narratives. She adopts annecdotes and artifacts from others in order to permeate them in her personal folklore. From the real and the imagined, She creates intersections and transforms the narration. Memory being forcibly at a distance from lived experience , she questions the importance of biographical truthfullness in the conception of identity. Relying rather on myth, on parable and on metaphor, she constructs biographical installations that surpass the limits of chronological narration. She weaves real-life experiences, exagerations and inventions in a very deliberate fashion, mimicking individuals organic behaviors.
